Strategies in Light China takes place mid May in Kowloon, Hong Kong and will look at issues such as how the SSL industry’s focus is changing from lumen per watt to lumen per dollar.
Strategies in Light China, which takes place on May 10-12, 2011, in Kowloon, Hong Kong, will be the first of the Strategies in Light series of international LED conferences to be held in greater China.
The theme of the conference is “East Meets West: Expanding the Global Market for LEDs and SSL.” Locating the conference in greater China acknowledges the increasing role played by the region in these markets.
All elements of the SSL vertical supply chain are represented in China, from substrates to finished lighting products. Moreover, the region is an important and rapidly expanding market for all LED-related products.
SIL China seeks to bring together executives from the leading LED and SSL companies worldwide to explore the markets, applications business outlook and most recent technology developments, with a special focus on China.
Featured speakers
The conference Keynote Speaker will be Biing-Jye Lee, Chairman of Epistar Corporation. Lee is a highly respected LED industry veteran, having founded Epistar in 1996, and since built it to become the world’s largest merchant supplier of LED chips. Lee’s presentation will address the topic of “Actualizing LED Lighting”, and it will discuss how the SSL industry’s focus is changing from lumen per watt to lumen per dollar to enable the market for LED lighting to become a reality.
Other featured speakers at SIL China include: Alfred Felder, President and CEO, Osram Opto Semiconductors Asia, Ltd.; Xiao Fei (Jack) Zhang, CEO, Gaogong LED Institute; Piet Derks, Senior Director and General Manager, Lighting R&D China, Philips Lighting; and Enboa Wu, Vice President and Group Director, Materials and Packaging Technology Group, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI).
Felder’s presentation will analyze the technical factors and challenges that will affect SSL development. Furthermore, it will provide insights on innovative SSL applications with state-of-the art LED technologies.
Piet Derks of Philips Lighting will discuss the challenges for the lighting industry to successfully introduce LEDs in outdoor applications in China, especially for roadway lighting.
Enboa Wu of ASTRI will provide an overview of ASTRI’s work on SSL. Research results on power GaN vertical LED chips, LED packaging, LEDs for indoor and outdoor lighting, and LEDs for flat-panel and projector displays will be presented.
Market presentations
Jack Zhang, the most highly respected market researcher and publisher covering the LED scene in China, will provide an overview of the HB-LED market in China, including a discussion of how the Chinese government incentive program is responsible for the huge worldwide investment in the upstream (epi and chips) segment of the LED industry in China.
As is traditional for all Strategies in Light conferences, the opening presentation will be a review of the worldwide market for HB-LEDs, given by Ella Shum, Director of LED Market Research at Strategies Unlimited. The presentation will provide a review and update of worldwide market developments in HB-LEDs in 2010 and 2011. Top level market growth trends will be discussed, as well as developments in each of the major application areas, including lighting. In addition, a market forecast through 2015 will be provided.
